Special Safety Law For Journalsits is Need of the Hour

Expressing concern at the increasing attacks against journalists in the country Balwinder Singh Jammu, Secretary General of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) emphasized the need for a strong law to counter attacks on journalists. He was speaking at the 9th annual calendar release ceremony held at Press Club Bhagta Bhai on 8 January.

The calendar release ceremony, which has become a tradition for the last nine years was attended by Olympian Avneet Sidhu, AIG Punjab Police and Balwinder Jammu as chief guests. Balbir Singh Jandu, State President of Punjab Chandigarh Journalists Union (PCJU), Jai Singh Chhibber, acting President of PCJU and Santokh Singh Gill, Secretary and in charge of PCJU Malwa Zone participated as special guests.

Journalist Tota Singh Deena shared insights into the life and achievements of Arjuna Awardee Avneet Kaur Sidhu in the field of sports. Chairman of the Press Club Bhagta Parveen Garg gave details about the activities of the Press Club. The Press Club so far  distributed 109 sewing machines to needy girls, organized free medical camps and honoured meritorious students of government schools.

Chief guest Olympian Avneet Kaur Sidhu appreciated the efforts of Press Club Bhagta, underlining that media plays a significant role in society. On this occasion, Balwinder Jammu, Balveer Singh Jandu, Jai Singh Chhibber, and Santokh Singh Gill spoke on various issues confronting journalists and urged the government to enact special laws to act as a deterrent against attacks on journalists.

Speakers also appreciated the welfare activities taken up by Press Club Bhagta Bhai and its contribution to journalism. On the occasion, Avneet Kaur Sidhu was given the “Dhiyaan Da Maan” (Pride of Daughters) Award.
